Advocacy

    The American Kratom Association is working to make natural kratom safe and to keep it available for millions of Americans who use it for health and wellness; manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers whose livelihoods depend on a safe and robust market; and for scientific and research communities that are actively exploring its potential.

    In this significant effort, AKA engages daily with congressional leaders, government agencies, academia, and the media—a holistic effort to promote your interests. Among its specific activities, the association:

    • Works with members to shape and articulate policies that promote safety and assure access to kratom;
    • Actively engages with leaders in the United States Senate and House of Representatives to support legislation and oversight that affect kratom’s safety, trade, and availability;
    • Monitors the efforts by federal agencies like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to incorrectly characterize the science and safety of natural kratom;
    • Works regularly with the media, academia, scientific community, and policy thought leaders to support continued research into kratom and its benefits, as well as disseminate relevant and accurate information to the public;
    • Establishes, advocates, and certifies Good Manufacturing Processes (GMP) to let consumers know that the kratom they have purchased meets rigorous standards;
    • Encourages the FDA to use its regulatory and enforcement authority to pursue manufacturers and distributors of kratom that has been adulterated or contaminated by foreign—and often dangerous—substances.

    In this advocacy effort, AKA works closely with consumers and market leaders in an effective grassroots initiative that provides resources not only in Washington, D.C., but throughout the states.
